Tangrid doesn't detect windows from CrossOver/Wine apps — they never appear in Auto Flow, tabbed layouts, or the window switcher.
Setup:
- macOS 26, M2 Pro, Tangrid 1.5.9
- CrossOver 26.3 running a 32-bit Windows app (business/CAD software)
Key detail: AltTab detects and switches these windows fine, so they ARE accessible via the AX API. Tangrid is filtering them out.
Cause, as best I can tell: Wine's winemac.drv creates real NSWindows, but they report AXRole=AXWindow with an EMPTY AXSubrole. Any filter requiring AXSubrole == AXStandardWindow will drop them.
Other things I checked, to save you time:
- The wrapper app is foreground — LSBackgroundOnly=false, no LSUIElement
- CrossOver is not in my windowRules exclusion list
- Bundle ID is randomized per bottle: com.codeweavers.CrossOverHelper.., in case anything keys off bundle identity
- I tried enabling Wine's virtual desktop to collapse everything into one container window — still not detected, so it's not about child/popup windows
Request: treat AXRole=AXWindow with an empty subrole as manageable, or add an opt-in per-app override so users can force Tangrid to manage them.
This would help anyone running CrossOver, Wine, Whisky, Kegworks, or Porting Kit — all of them share the same winemac.drv backend, so one change covers the whole category. Happy to test a build.
